Probiotics
An estimated 100 trillion microorganisms inhabit every normal,
healthy bowel, where they keep pathogens (harmful microorganisms)
in check, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and contribute
to immune function.
If these gut-dwelling bacteria become depleted (usually because of
disease, stress, poor diet, or medications like antibiotics) health
problems can result.
According to Harvard Women's Health Watch,
probiotic therapy has been best studied for the treatment of diarrhea.
It may also help people with Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome,
and other gastrointestinal problems.

You should not start probiotics until about day five on the diet.

Elaine wote:"I would only go for 3 billion a day to start with - divide the doze: am. and pm." [This means 1.5 billion dose to be given twice a day]. Start slowly with the L. Acidophilus. You don't want more than 3
billion divided over a day when you first start. As your child gets
used to this amount of probiotic, you may gradually increase it up
to 9 billion cfu per day.
Link for the GI ProStart Yogurt Starter When it comes to probiotics, as with other supplements, there is variation in the individual tolerances. One size does not fit all. Some find lower doses of probiotics better tolerated over the long-term, many individuals do well with the recommended dose, and some do better with higher doses.

The L.Acidophilus should be stored in the refrigerator.

Some children exhibit increased hyperactivity or aggression when
they start the probiotics. Other children get digestive symptoms
such as diarrhea, constipation, and light-brown-yeasty looking stools.
You just have to keep experimenting with the amount, you might need
to start out with a smaller dose if you get too many negative reactions.

SCD Goat Yogurt, The Better Choice
The SCD goat yogurt contains a much larger number of the beneficial lactic acid bacteria than the probiotic supplement.
Another "plus" of the yogurt: the milk proteins encapsulate good
bacteria. Then they can travel further in the GI tract where they do
more healing. Although probiotics are very helpful, they don't do
this. It is another reason why yogurt appears to promote increased
healing. |

"The VSL#3 is illegal and I certainly don't recommend it. I've consulted with a few people who have gone into massive flares after trying the VSL#3. Also I know lots who have had major problems with bifidum bacteria (especially when on SCD). Perhaps it is because the SCD clears out the harmful microbes
and bifidum takes over, overgrowing into huge numbers. The by-products
of bifidum bacteria could be what sends people into flares - especially
those who have sensitive guts or those at the beginning of the diet,
these people unfortunately have "fertile ground" for bifidum bacteria
to overgrow." |

This is attributed to biofilms and SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) People with IBD, IBS, or autism have a high rate of biofilms. SIBO is very common among individuals with digestive problems. About 40% of people with IBS have SIBO which is also associated with Crohns. Relationship of Biofilms, Bifidus and "Good Bacteria" Bacteria live together on the surface of the intestine in a BIOFILM. They help each other extract nourishment, mainly from the foods that we are not able to digest and absorb into the bloodstream. Inside the biofilm, "good bacteria" can mutate into pathogenic ones. (Elaine was very careful to limit the approved bacteria because she feared such mutations. Most people with IBD or ASD have biofilms in their bodies). This is verified in Medscape. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/484361_2 "Biofilms increase the opportunity for gene transfer between bacteria and and among them. This is important because those bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics may transfer the genes for resistance to neighboring more susceptible bacteria. Gene transfer has the ability to convert a previous avirulent commensal organism into a highly virulent pathogen." [18] [18]Lewis K. Riddle of biofilm resistance. Antimicrobial Agents Chemother 2001;45:999-1007. The Risk of Bifidus and SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) The medical school textbook, Biochemistry and Physiology of Bifidobacteria, written by Anatoly Bezkorovainy, professor at Rush Medical College comments on this as well. This book explains that bifidus is helpful for humans except under certain conditions. One of these exceptions is SIBO.(small intestine bacterial overgrowth) Bifidus tends to overgrow and cause fat malabsorption for people with SIBO. Many people with digestive problems have SIBO in their bodies To view the comments inside the book regarding the risk with bifidus: Scroll down the page until you see "Metabolic Disorders Associated with Bacterial Overgrowth." Link to view the comments about bifidus in the book SCD works effectively on many bacteria in a beneficial manner when the approved probiotic is used.
